Temporary Research Scientist

The University of Eastern Finland is searching for a research scientist with strong computational skills and interest in ecology to work full-time on the BioVeL until the project end on 31 August 2014.
The place of work is the School of Computing in Joensuu or elsewhere as agreed. The tasks include, in cooperation with domain scientists, modelling of ecosystem functioning and valuation of ecosystem services using frameworks such as Biome-BCG and InVest. We are also modelling invasive species, both native and alien harmful species in forest ecosystems, and apply ecological niche modelling to solve problems in invasive species management.
The work entails benchmarking the e-Science approach vs traditional research work, and deployment of models through web service interfaces for use through the myGrid family of tools. All work is done with the agile software development methods. The job also includes assisting external BioVeL users in automation of the scientific research process, and writing of scientific articles in cooperation with BioVeL’s Europe-wide consortium partners and scientist users. Desirable requirements include good knowledge of statistical methods and practical knowledge of R. Programming skills, preferably in Java are desirable, as well as knowledge of geographic information, web services and computational grid environments.
A Master’s degree, at minimum, in environmental, natural resources, mathematical, or computational sciences and good command of the English language are required. Depending on the level of qualification of the appointee, the salary will be based on level 4-6 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities (2432.20-3293.22/month). In addition to the basic salary, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance, up to 46.3%.
