Blindsquare – a digital app designed to help people with visual impairment and Kinetic Stories - a children’s animated book stories have been nominated for an international app competition.

Nominees were invited from 168 countries and 5 winners were selected for each of the eight different categories of the awards organised by the World Summit Award.

Blindsquare was delegated a winner in the ‘e-Inclusion and Empowerment‘ category being designed in order to help the blind and visually impaired with their day to day activities.

The augmented reality app uses latest technology and GPS tracking to identify the most relevant information and render it back via a high quality speech synthesis. For example, the app could find and guide people to a popular cafe within a small radius, giving the blind or visually impaired the independence to travel.

Kinetic Stories won in the ‘e-Entertainment and Games‘ category being a children’s book designed in an interactive way. Employing speech recognition and motion sensors, the app is targeted at three to six years old children who can literally step in the story-telling, meet and interact with characters from their favourite stories.

Ilkka Pirttimaa, the MD. of MIPsoft who developed BlindSquare commented that she was very pleased with the award which pays-off the effort of a small company to try and provide a solution to big issues in our day to day lives.

The award ceremony will be held in October 2013 at the WSA Global Congress venue in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
